What is Liquid Waterproofing Membrane? A PU-based solution, liquid waterproofing is applied with a roller to a range of surfaces. Once cured, it forms a reliable watertight layer, typically referred to as a membrane. Liquid membrane is commonly found on flat roofing and is utilised in emergency repairs, and in anti-slip surfacing with the addition of a suitable medium.

‘What is Liquid Waterproofing Membrane?” is a question we are routinely asked at PermaRoof UK. We developed our range of liquid waterproofing systems to suit complex flat roofing, box gutters, support the creation of anti slip surfacing and give homeowners a reliable liquid repair solution. As a leading flat roofing supplier, what we don’t know about flat roofs isn’t worth knowing… let’s look at the question in further detail to see how to tackle your projects.

The applications of liquid PU
Liquid waterproofing membrane has been developed with flexibility in mind, offering coverage over a range of substrates. Once correctly applied, the system is reliable, remaining durable over an expected service life of around 35 years.
Liquid roofing
Flat roofing installations can sometimes be complex in design, making membranes difficult or inappropriate to install. PermaRoof’s P500 liquid is applied differently and contains a self-levelling compound to ensure an even coat, even in the tightest corners. In the industry, these types of systems are also known as liquid rubber roofs.
Box gutter lining
Liquid waterproofing is the ideal choice for repairing or renovating concrete box gutters and balconies. These types of applications are fast and straightforward, ideal for DIY. We developed a detailing system, available online here, to tackle this and other flat roof repairs.
Anti slip surfacing
Liquid rubber forms an effective base for anti-slip surfacing. A suitable anti-slip medium, often stone chips or silica beads can be cast over still-wet liquid membrane or mixed into the solution and applied to form an embedded effect. A top coat can be applied for additional UV protection and to maximise the lifespan.

How to apply liquid membrane
Our liquid waterproofing systems have been developed to be fast and easy to apply, whether you’re handling a roof for a client or working on your own garage roof. Our main system consists of a two-part liquid PU coating, a mesh-type bandage and UV protective top coat to maximise longevity. The liquid coating is applied using good quality rollers – 4” for detailing and 9” for main area application.
Preparation of the surface area is important and should not be overlooked for the best results. It is recommended that old roof coverings are stripped back and the deck carefully cleaned and dried before application. Follow the detailed installation guide carefully to ensure your surfaces are correctly prepared and the system applied according to the guidelines. Download your copy below (PDF) or read online.
Check that roofing and timber surfaces are in good condition prior to application. Consider recovery board as an option to cover old roofing or to give a smooth, even working surface for liquid rubber. Give the team a call and we’ll be happy to chat this through with you.
