How PermaRoof can help with your eco-roofing project

Blue Roofing
Blue roofing has grown in recent years, aiming to help ease the pressure on waterways and reduce the risk of local flooding. Rainwater is collected and temporarily stored before being gradually released at a pre-determined rate. This type of roofing relies on a highly reliable and stable waterproofing layer for longevity.

Brown Roofing
Brown roofing offers a different approach to other types of eco roof system. The substrate is left without deliberate planting mediums and typically consists of a soil base over drainage and waterproofing. This type of roof aims to recreate the brown field environment that would exist had the property not been constructed.
Innovative roofing systems with a sustainable approach
Today, sustainability is high on the priority list for home and commercial property owners all over the country. At PermaRoof UK, we take sustainability seriously and stock roofing systems to support longevity and minimise waste. Whether you’re replacing the roofing on your shed or planning a large commercial installation, we know that every detail is important to meet our collective obligation to look after the planet.
Some of the latest initiatives and innovative roofing systems that offer support to the environment:
Blue roofing systems
Blue roofing systems are designed to help alleviate the impact of water run off and prevent flooding. This innovative system stores, treats and releases water in a controlled fashion, supporting rainwater harvesting projects too.
EPDM roofing systems are the perfect partner to support blue roofing, offering high performance and reliability, UV and ozone stability throughout an exceptional service life expectancy.
Green roof systems
Green roofing systems are far from being a new concept, but advancements in design and application are widespread and consistently evolving. Whether you’re planning an extensive, intensive or brown green roof project, we know that waterproofing at the base layer is critical.
PermaRoof UK offers comprehensive support from the start with expert advice, a range of reliable waterproofing options and beautiful green roof systems to complete the installation.
Inverted roofing systems
Inverted roofing, often referred to as ‘upside down roofing’ is a growing concept that is replacing warm roof designs across the UK. The waterproofing layer is installed beneath a ballasted insulating layer that uses pedestals to create air flow. These types of roofing designs can offer a wide range of benefits, particularly for storm water management and environmental performance on projects with foot traffic, such as terraces or intensive green roofs.
For inverted roofing systems, both insulating boards and waterproofing should be seamlessly reliable to ensure the longevity and success of the project. Liquid roofing systems and fleece backed EPDM are ideal for inverted roofing.
Eco-Roofing FAQs
Yes. A garden environment can be produced using intensive green roofing. These have deeper planting layers to facilitate specimen planting and a wider use of garden plants or shrubs.
Intensive green roof projects can often be landscaped to include seating (subject to load bearing capacity).
Green roof layers typically consist of:
- Waterproofing membrane over the roof deck – this is the base layer and it must be reliable
- Protective, insulating layers
- Root barrier
- Drainage layers consisting of gravel, stones or other suitable medium
- Planting layers – including soil and planting
The top layers can also include specimen plants or trees, walkways, terracing and seating areas in an intensive green roof design (subject to load bearing capacity).
A flat garage roof is perfect for a green roof project, providing it has a suitable roof deck. Corrugated roofing would need to be replaced, for example, with a flat, suitable surface, such as timber.
Green roof projects are suitable for competent and confident homeowners with skills. The installation of the waterproofing layer is fast and straightforward, ideal for DIY with an EPDM roof kit. This provides a reliable base from which the rest of the green roofing layers are installed.
We offer support and a range of green roofing kits to help make planning and installation of the system straightforward. We can also connect you with a trained green roof installer if you decide DIY isn’t for you.
The installation of a green roof may not be as much as you think. We can help from the roof deck up with kits for waterproofing, drainage and planting layers.

Green roofing has been around for thousands of years. Early green roofs consisted of moss, leaves and woven twigs to keep out the rain and later came reed or thatched roofing.
Modern green roofing is a bit different. Consisting of layers of material, today’s green roofs can help with urban rainwater management and reduce surface flooding in some areas. They can also provide a haven for wildlife, and this has in recent times contributed to its rise in popularity.
A living roof is another term given to green roofing. It refers to the planting mediums used and can be appropriately used for both extensive and intensive green roof systems.
A sedum roof is essentially a green roof, but with sedum plants used exclusively as the planting medium.
Blue roofs are complex in both the planning and the installation. It is always advisable to engage a reliable professional during the planning stages to determine the best way forward for the project.
Blue roof systems are installed above the waterproofing membrane and this job is perfect for DIY. We provide full support and a range of EPDM roof kits to help you get this right, first time.
The waterproofing membrane at the base level of a green roof must be highly reliable, providing 100% waterproofing throughout the expected service life. Because drainage layers in green roofs typically consist of gravel or other stones, a protective layer must be installed over the membrane to protect it.
In addition, membranes should be protected from root penetration in certain types of green roof design, such as those using plants with deeper root growth.
