Don’t Slip Up! Winter-Ready Your Walkways with PermaRoof P500
Safer steps. Grippier paths. One Less Cold Weather Worry.
Winter in the UK has an annoying habit of turning everyday garden paths and steps into slippery skating rinks. One cold morning, a patch of hidden ice, and suddenly taking the bins out feels more like an Olympic sport than a daily chore…
To avoid bruises, twisted ankles and dented festive spirit, get ahead of winter with a simple, long-lasting safety upgrade. With the right liquid waterproofing system, you can ensure your outdoor paths and steps are safer, grippier and better protected throughout the colder months.
Whether it’s family, visitors, delivery drivers or the postie, everyone will appreciate a surface that feels secure underfoot – whatever the weather decides to throw at it.
What is PermaRoof P500?
PermaRoof P500 is a professional-grade liquid waterproofing system commonly used on flat roofs, but it’s also ideal for paths, steps, balconies, thresholds and walkways where durability and slip resistance matter.
By combining P500 with a recommended anti-slip aggregate, you create a seamless, waterproof, textured surface that stays grippy in wet, cold and icy conditions.
This isn’t a temporary winter fix – it’s a long-term defence that helps protect surfaces year after year. Less slipping, less water damage and fewer heart-stopping moments means you can wrap up warm, put the kettle on and enjoy the season with one less worry.
How it Works
PermaRoof P500 forms a flexible, reinforced waterproof membrane that prevents water soaking into concrete, stone or paving – a major advantage when it comes to freeze-thaw damage.
By adding an anti-slip aggregate into or onto the final coat, you achieve:
- Reduced water penetration
- Improved grip underfoot
- Safer paths and steps throughout winter and beyond
- And what’s more, it’s all done and dusted over a single weekend.
What You’ll Need
Waterproofing & Anti-Slip
- PermaRoof P500 Liquid Waterproofing System – give us a call today
- Slate chippings or anti-slip beading
Tools & Preparation
- Stiff broom and pressure washer (or hose)
- Concrete or paving cleaner (to remove moss and algae)
- Roller frames and quality rollers
- 9” rollers for larger areas
- 4” rollers for edges and details
- Masking tape to protect walls, doors and borders
Top tip: Always wear gloves and eye protection and only apply in dry conditions.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare the Surface
Sweep away leaves, dirt and loose debris. Wash thoroughly to remove moss and algae – these thrive in winter, but they don’t mix well with coatings.
The cleaner and drier the surface, the better the adhesion, finish and grip.
2. Prime (if Required)
Very porous surfaces such as brick, block or concrete require priming. Follow PermaRoof guidance or seek technical advice, and allow the primer to fully cure before proceeding.
3. Apply the P500 Base Coat
Thoroughly mix the P500 using an electric paddle whisk, making sure to reach the bottom of the tin for true colour distribution.
Apply evenly using a roller. Work methodically and patiently – this coat forms the primary waterproof layer.
4. Reinforce Corners, Edges & Details with Fibreglass Matting
For steps, joints, cracks, edges and stress points:
- Cut fibreglass matting to size
- Lay into the wet base coat
- Fully saturate with more P500 until translucent
- Smooth out air pockets and overlap joints
This reinforcement adds strength and long-term durability.
5. Create the Anti-Slip Finish (Top Coat)
This final coat is where the anti-slip magic happens.
Best practice:
- Apply the final coat of P500
- Broadcast slate chippings over the wet coating
- Allow to cure
- Sweep away any loose aggregate
Alternative method:
- Mix anti-slip beading directly into the P500 before rolling on the top coat (Suitable for lighter slip resistance, but broadcasting gives the most consistent grip)
Anti-Slip Made Simple
For garden paths, steps and walkways, PermaRoof P500 and your chosen aggregate combine to deliver the ideal balance of grip, comfort and durability.
Whether you choose to mix in beading or broadcast slate chippings, you’ll create a tough, UV-stable, waterproof and anti-slip surface that performs reliably through winter and well beyond.
A small upgrade. A big safety win. Now that’s a task definitely worth ticking off before the mince pies come out.
