How PermaRoof can help with your re-roofing project
Repair or replace? How to decide
The majority of minor repairs can be effectively dealt with on flat roofs quickly. However, sometimes it isn’t clear whether the damage is severe enough and It can be tempting to avoid the cost of re-roofing by repairing.
Damage to timbers
It is always advisable to carefully assess any damage. If you’ve spotted it early enough, it can typically be dealt with fast enough with a minor repair to avoid further damage to the roof deck and other elements of the roof structure.
If there are signs of damage to the deck or any timbers, these repairs should be carried out first. Repairing the covering in this instance is literally papering over the cracks.
Repeated repairs
Some homeowners find themselves repeatedly repairing the same roofing – often more than once a year. Over time, repair costs can accumulate and at some point, will amount to more than the cost of re-roofing.
Replacing damaged roof coverings with a high performance membrane can equate to significant cost savings over time, compared to the cost of repeated repairs. EPDM has a life expectancy of over 50 years, unmatched by other systems.
Improving reliability
Some types of projects require a change in roof type, such as converting a garage into an office or leisure space. Traditional UK garage roofing often doesn’t meet the reliability requirements of an office and will need updating in most projects.
In these instances, carefully inspect the roofing or call in a professional to assess the project and make sure it has the reliability you need before you make any repairs. It may be better to replace the roof covering at this stage.
Are you looking for a reliable trade roofer?
Re-roofing projects are not for the feint hearted when it comes to DIY. Many homeowners prefer to engage a reliable professional to ensure the highest performance over the lifespan of the systems they choose.
PermaRoof UK can help connect homeowners with recommended local roofing specialists in a free service. The National Installer Network covers the entire country, offering peace of mind and reliability.
Roofing FAQs
There are many reasons that homeowners consider re-roofing. One of the most common is the nuisance and cost of repeated repairs. Once repairing the roof begins to outweigh the cost of replacement, then it is time to re-roof.
For some roof projects, such as green roofing, for example, a highly reliable waterproofing layer is needed to provide protection at the base of the installation. This means that old or previously repaired coverings will not be suitable and will need to be upgraded.
If you require advice about whether to repair or re-roof, talk to us and let us help guide you through. We can also connect you with a local trained and reliable professional if you need further guidance.
This depends on the nature of the repair and the existing roof covering. Generally, it is more cost-effective and kinder to the environment in the long-term to replace tired or old, damaged roofing with a higher performing alternative.
It is recommended that all existing roof covering is stripped back to the deck or substrate before installing EPDM. Suitable for installation over a range of substrates, use water-based adhesives for timber and bonding adhesive for other materials, such as concrete.

Felt has been a traditional roofing material for decades and can still be the first thought for many UK homeowners. However, today’s modern single ply membranes are outperforming felt in almost every way.
EPDM has a life expectancy of over 50 years and is perfect for most home re-roofing projects to replace felt.
Yes, EPDM can be cut in situ using sharp, long-bladed EPDM scissors. Mark the EPDM with a chalk or crayon along the cutting line using a straight edge for the best results.
When trimming the overhang edges, such as when fitting a shed roof kit, ensure the line is straight and even, leaving sufficient (approx. 50mm) in place to seal when the battens are replaced.
For most projects, we can custom-cut a single sheet of EPDM that requires no seams. RubberCover can be cut in sheets up to 15m x 60m and this is one of the benefits of the system for ease of installation.
However, if EPDM does need to be joined, it is made straightforward with the use of EPDM seam tapes. There are two ways of joining EPDM using 6” tape and 3” tape with QuickPrime Plus primer. See our installation guides for a step-by-step tutorial.
Pipe extrusions on flat roofs can be easily handled using an EPDM pipe boot flashing accessory. These are specifically designed to suit a range of pipe sizes and can be adjusted easily on-site. Find out more and buy an EPDM pipe boot online.
EPDM systems are fast and easy to install. This has made them popular for DIY on a range of domestic projects, such as:
- Shed roofing
- Garage roof replacement
- Flat roof extensions
- Garden rooms
