Avoid Clogged Gutters
Clogged gutters are one of the most common issues leading to damaged and leaking roofing across the UK. Removing leaves and debris is a typical maintenance task for many homeowners – until now. Preventing debris from entering the gutter and drain system is easy with an innovative, yet simple solution – the Gutterbrush.

Flat Roof Trim
Flat roof trim is an important part of any flat roof project, helping to seal and protect the edges and most vulnerable parts of the roof. We stock a range of roof trim and accessories for edges and gutters with EPDM systems and DIY install in mind. Simplify and complete projects of all sizes, creating a long term, reliable seal.
The importance of gutter maintenance
Did you know that one of the top causes of a roofing repairs in the UK is the classic leaking gutter? Clearing gutters is a common annual maintenance task for homeowners all over the country, usually during the winter months once the autumn leaves have finished falling.
Gutters can also suffer from other issues aside from clogging. Some older, metal gutters corrode over time and others can split, crack or become damaged by other debris. It is always a good idea to keep an eye on gutters for signs of clogging or damage, as waiting until the damage appears inside the house could mean it is too late.
How can you tell if your gutters are clogged?
Because gutters are typically out of the range of sight, it can be tricky to spot a problem, unless you can clearly see a hole or crack. If you’ve spotted signs of water ingress inside the house, damp patches on ceilings or around the windows, this is a big flag, and the leak may have been there for some time.
You may be able to tell if you watch the gutters and drainpipes during a shower of rain. Look to see if you can see free-flowing water out of the exit points and keep an eye on the gutters for signs of overflow.
Gutters can become clogged and lead to damage quickly, so if you notice a problem, it is important to tackle it as soon as you can.
Tips to help prevent repairs caused by gutter leaks

Install a Gutterbrush
A Gutterbrush can offer a fast and simple solution to clogging gutters. Constructed in a ‘bottle brush’ fashion, the Gutterbrush is designed to sit snugly in most domestic gutters with its polyurethane filaments filling the void. This innovative product prevents leaves and other debris from entering the gutter system, either trapping them in the filaments or deflecting them away. Rainwater can still pass through the filaments and continue through the drainage system.
Visually inspect gutters regularly
Keep an eye on gutters and the base of your roofing, even if you just give it a glance on a weekly basis. Once you become used to looking, you’ll spot potential issues more quickly. Look out for cracks or holes appearing in the gutters and when it rains, make sure that the drain downpipes are running freely. This will show that the gutters are still flowing.

Refresh old metal gutters
Traditional metal gutters can be costly to replace, also involving high labour levels in their removal and disposal. Refurbishing these gutters instead of replacing them can provide a long term, cost effective solution which also ticks an environmental box in terms of reducing waste.
Today, gutter refurbishment can be fast and easy too. RubberGutter EPDM is a self-adhering EPDM membrane that is designed to give metal gutters a second lifetime and can also be used on timber and concrete. The self-adhering properties of the RubberGutter system accelerate installation and simplify the process compared to other gutter lining products.
Use trim to seal and protect flat roofing
Installing edge and gutter trim completes the seal and finishes flat roofing perfectly, maximising performance over the service life of EPDM.
PermaRoof trim has been developed to work with EPDM roofing and our ranges include an option to sandwich the membrane and minimise the chance of water ingress. By using trim and directing the water to the gutter edge, while protecting the timbers, the integrity of the system can be maintained easily, offering peace of mind to homeowners.
Flashing trim is also an important part of a flat roof, especially if you’re dealing with an adjoining building or upstand. When joining to brickwork, it is critical that water cannot get down behind the membrane and that local standards for upstands are met.

Guttering FAQs
The Gutterbrush is often referred to as the Hedgehog because of its appearance. It has polypropylene brush filaments spun around a stainless-steel wire spine. The design is reminiscent of a bottle brush.
Once correctly installed and secured, the filaments are designed to last for years. A 10-year guarantee is included.
At PermaRoof UK, we stock Gutterbrush leaf guards in three stylish colours – white, black and brown. Simply select the colour you require in the drop down box when you order.
The brushes should run continuously along the whole length of your guttering. When one brush finishes, bend the excess wiring at the end of each brush backwards to form a hook and simply attach the two brush ends together to continue the run. The brushes can run directly across the down pipe or drain outlets.
If there is excess brush at the end of the run, cut the excess of with a pair of wire snips but make sure you leave approximately 50mm overrun, then untwist the wire to remove excess filaments, re-twist the spine and bend into a hook shape and secure into the gutter.
Before installation ensure that any leaves and other debris are removed, and the gutters, downpipes and drains are clean.
It is important that the correct diameter brush is chosen for your gutters or drains. The brush must fit snugly in position without any gaps either side. If the brush is allowed to ‘rattle’, it will be much less effective and is likely to be blown out. If you measure the inside width of the gutter and it is, say 90mm, the correct diameter of brush would be the standard 100mm diameter.
The filaments at the top of the brush should extend slightly above the level of the tiles or slate.
Many homeowners clear their own gutters to save money on professional fees. However, there is another way to keep gutters clear without the maintenance. Installing a gutter brush or leaf guard prevents debris from entering the gutter, while still allowing rainwater to flow freely through the system. Fast and easy to install, these innovative tools can help to minimise gutter cleaning for years to come.
How often gutters are cleaned can depend on the location and the surrounding elements, such as overhanging trees. Flat roof gutters may need to be checked and cleared more often than first floor gutters if this is the case. Generally, annually or twice annually is enough to keep gutters free flowing.
It is always a good idea to check gutters during or shortly after heavy rain, when it is easier to spot a leak, damage or an overflowing gutter.
One of the top problems that gutters suffer from is clogging. In the UK, the autumn months fill gutters and drains with falling leaves and other small debris, which quickly clog gutters and lead to problems.
Annual gutter maintenance includes clearing gutters of debris, which otherwise prevents the free flow of rainwater through the gutter and drain system. Clogged gutters quickly overflow when it rains and if left, it isn’t long before water begins to penetrate the timbers, getting inside the building.
This is why gutter maintenance is top of the priority list for most homeowners every year. Many have an annual budget for gutter clearing, preferring to bring in a professional roofer or maintenance specialist to handle it. Some install a Gutterbrush, which prevents debris from entering the gutter, but allows free drainage for rainwater.
Gutter maintenance is typically carried out annually by homeowners across the UK. This involves clearing any debris from the gutter troughs and ensuring that rainwater can run freely through the entire gutter and drainage system.
There are innovative gutter leaf guards available that can eliminate gutter clutter and reduce gutter maintenance. Find out more about the Gutterbrush here.
It is also recommended that visual inspections of the gutters are carried out regularly and particularly during or after heavy rain to make sure there are no leaks. Metal gutters are particularly susceptible to rust over time and once they begin to fail, most homeowners look to replace them with a plastic alternative. Today’s eco conscious residents can also benefit from the latest gutter renovation products, which promise to give a second life to metal gutters.
Flat roof trim can provide a completely watertight seal in EPDM roofing systems by sandwiching the membrane and preventing water ingress. Trim is typically fitted around the exposed edges of the roof and to fix to adjoining upstanding brickwork where necessary. In addition to enhancing performance of rubber roofing, trim gives the project a neat and tidy finish, essential for aesthetic kerb value.
