Liquid Rubber Roof Coatings | P100 at PermaRoof

Liquid rubber roof coatings are fast becoming a game changer in complex flat and low slope roofing designs. Literally waterproofing the parts of the roof that membranes simply cannot reach, they can help to extend the life of your roof and are straightforward enough to apply yourself.

At PermaRoof UK, we launched our own P100 liquid rubber roof coating, developed especially for DIY home waterproofing and in kit form to simplify ordering. We offer expert advice and are here to help you through – let’s get started with our beginner’s guide to liquid rubber roof coatings.

What is liquid rubber roofing?

Liquid rubber roofing systems are flexible, waterproof solutions, commonly acrylic or PU-based and acceptably known industry-wide as liquid rubber. During the past decade, liquid roofing systems have been taking the commercial and industrial sectors by storm. This is because they have offered a reliable, seamless solution to waterproofing complex roofing and those with multiple extrusions, where membranes are difficult or impossible to install.

Applied with a roller and reinforced with a mesh bandage, P100 gives a one-coat finish, and delivers a long-term approach for a wide range of DIY projects.

Applications and trends driving popularity

Cost efficiency

  • A growing number of homeowners are embracing the cost savings that DIY can offer and exploring newer and more sustainable materials and systems that can be installed more easily. Liquid rubber coatings offer a long-term solution, fast and straightforward to install and cure, cutting installation time for both trades and DIY projects.

Sustainability

  • Sustainability is also high on the priority list for many homeowners, which has led to an increased consumer interest in energy efficiency and eco friendlier materials. With the ability to provide seamless waterproofing, liquid systems directly support projects such as the installation of skylights or green and blue roofing systems, which require extremely high performance over a longer life expectancy.

Reduced waste

  • The longevity of liquid rubber roof coatings compared to other common flat roof materials means a significant reduction in waste and landfill over the service life. When applied correctly, liquid roofing can last for more than 25 years, reducing the frequency of replacement and wastage.

Energy efficiency

  • Innovation in liquid rubber roof coatings has grown and continues to evolve and today supports a sustainable, energy efficient build. It can work in unison with multiple skylights, water harvesting systems, solar systems and more.
  • The system itself offers energy efficient performance, with reflective properties that can help to reduce heat absorption and lower energy bills.

How to apply a liquid roof

Step 1: Clean and prepare the roof

  • Remove debris, moss, or dirt using a roof broom and cleaner.
  • Carry out any necessary repairs.
  • If you’re installing over new insulation or cover boards, make sure this is completed fully.
  • Ensure the surface is completely dry before application.

Step 2: Apply a primer (If needed)

  • Primer can benefit the application of some liquid roofing systems over certain substrates, such as concrete, which can be porous. Check the guidelines on the label of your product or give our team a call if you’re unsure.
  • If you have used a primer, ensure it is dry before continuing.

Step 3: Apply the liquid rubber roofing

  • Once you’re ready to begin application, thoroughly mix the liquid solution for several minutes using the paddle attachment (included in the kit) for your electric drill.
  • Follow the step-by-step application instructions, incorporating the matting and paying attention to the edge detailing first.

Step 4: Install the edge trim (optional)

  • Follow the straightforward installation process for the edge and gutter drip trim to complete the seal and increase kerb value.
  • Liquid roofing trim is not included in our standard, off-the-shelf liquid roofing kits. Please order separately from the online store here or talk to a member of the team today.

Safety tips and common mistakes to avoid

  • Spend time on the preparation:
    • Dirt or grease can prevent proper adhesion, leading to peeling or bubbles.
    • If you encounter stubborn grease or oil spots, use a power washer and/or a suitable solvent-free cleaner to remove them for the best results.
  • Keep an eye on the weather:
    • Liquid coatings are best applied in mild temperatures and low humidity, so look out for a clear day with no rain expected, ideally.
    • P100 cures quickly and can be showerproof almost straightaway.
  • Check for compatibility:
    • Not all coatings work on all roof types (e.g., some aren’t suited for shingles or metal).
    • P100 can waterproof almost any substrate – refer to the installation guide to find out more.

Can I apply liquid coatings over existing materials?

  • P100 can be applied over existing materials, such as insulating cover boards, membrane, metal or concrete substrates. However, to be effective, pre-existing materials must be in good condition and firmly and fully adhered to the roof deck.

Is it safe for the environment?

  • Many modern roofing systems today are inert and stable and do not leach chemicals into the environment. This is a contributing factor to the rise in popularity of liquid roofing.

What is included in the liquid roof kit?

  • Liquid PU roof coating
  • Reinforcing bandage
  • Rollers and sleeves
  • Mixing paddle attachment
