For when the shed isn’t just a shed

Sheds are a great addition to any garden. Not only can they be used as storage for all those garden accessories, but they have a wide variety of other uses too. You can make them a workshop for you to finish all those tasks that need doing, or you could even have a shed that doubles up as a summer house, ready for you to hide away and read or book or simply relax.

Garden sheds and buildings that need to house more than tools and a lawnmower require a more reliable and robust waterproofing material than before. Old-style coverings often don’t perform well for long, and need regular maintenance to prevent them from leaking. EPDM membranes offer the solution in single-sheet installation – no joins or seams to fail and let in water, long service life and low-to-no maintenance.

For homeowners with bigger ideas for a shed, we can help with bespoke kits, liquid waterproofing, insulation, skylights and more. We can even help you build a ‘shed’ to provide valuable additional living space with our range of steel framed garden buildings, available in standard sized or with a CAD design service option.

Leading support for DIY

We offer expert advice and product guidance, tips and buying advice specific to your project. Buy a shed roof kit off-the-shelf or create your own with just your measurements and imagination. We’ll support your DIY rubber shed roof install with free, step-by-step guides or we’ll connect you with a reliable, local professional to get the job done. Try the PermaRoof way.

Shed Roofing Buyers Guide

Choosing the right shed roofing system is important – to ensure that it ticks the boxes in terms of durability and performance for its intended use. In this guide, we’ll walk you through some of the key considerations and the options available for your shed roof.

Whether you’re planning a garden building conversion and changing the use of your shed or are simply fed up with replacing shed roof waterproofing, you’re in the right place.

Finding a sustainable, modern approach

Today, there is a wide variety of available modern materials to replace outdated traditional shed roofing. While this is good news for the homeowner, it can sometimes be difficult to choose the right system. The go-to felt shed roof is fast-becoming a thing of the past, yet many homeowners still want a DIY option.

Rubber shed roof membranes offer the perfect way forward with a sustainable solution – fast and easy to fit, durable and hard to damage and offering a 50-year service life expectancy. No more felt going to landfill and no more leak repairs.

Inspiration for Your Shed Roof

The changing face of sheds

The traditional shed roof has mostly ever been required to protect garden tools and equipment, sometimes outdoor toys. Modern homeowners typically now store a much wider range of goods and garden furniture in their sheds. They are also converting sheds to suit other purposes – workshops and garden rooms, for example. These may have services connected, insulation fitted and be finished to a higher standard than a regular shed.

These require a much more reliable form of waterproofing than traditional shed roofing materials to protect the interior and the integrity of the roof deck. We sell a range of systems suitable for all types of shed project:

Shed roof rubber

DIY garden shed waterproofing

The most popular DIY shed project is replacing the roof covering. Using cold-applied rubber roofing in a single sheet means no joins and no leaks and this is why felt is fast diminishing in popularity for DIY. A standard garden shed roof can be quickly and easily waterproofed for 50 years with an EPDM shed roof kit. These are bought in standard shed sizes with everything included. Find out more >

Sheds with flat roofing

Some older properties have brick built sheds or outbuildings with flat roofing. These may have been garages or workshops. Timber shed roofing can be easily handled with EPDM rubber, which is typically fitted in a single piece and uses accessories for extrusions and drain outlets. We stock a range of suitable kits for this type of shed roofing project. Find out more >

EPDM Rubber Flat Roof
Green roof on a garage

Green shed roofing

Green or living roofs are growing in popularity for domestic shed roofing. They consist of drainage layers and planting and require seamless waterproofing at deck level. Both EPDM and liquid roofing provide the reliable, seamless approach needed for green, blue and bio diverse eco roof systems. Talk to our Green Roof team.

Concrete shed roofing

Concrete shed roofing was popular when many UK homes were built after the war. They can be updated and sealed for the long term using a liquid roof coating. This is an excellent alternative to traditional hot applied waterproofing systems for concrete. EPDM Rubber membrane is also suitable for application onto concrete using primer and bonding adhesive.

Liquid PU

Building a shed or garden room

If you’re planning on building a shed or garden room yourself, we stock a range of off-the-shelf steel framed buildings. Easy to erect and fully customise to your own taste. We also offer a bespoke CAD design service for homeowners wishing to take their shed to another level. Flat shed roof design can be easily waterproofed using an EPDM kit. Find out more >

Waterproofing a beach hut

EPDM is the perfect material for reroofing a beach hut shed. Fast and straightforward to install, aesthetically tidy and high performing in the environment. Keep beach huts, fishing bivvies, bike sheds, bird-watching hides and boat houses watertight for the long term.

A watertight home for domestic pets

EPDM rubber is ideal for waterproofing animal shelters and houses. Keeps water out of rabbit hutches, goats sheds, horse stables and more. Protect your domestic animals from the weather and give them a leak free shelter. Ideal project for DIY.

Planning and Considerations

Getting your project off the ground

Shed roofing projects come in all shapes and sizes and our award-winning sales and customer support teams provide project-specific expert advice, product guidance and installation support. Whether you’re doing it yourself or looking for a reliable contractor, we can help – regardless of the size of your project.

When you’re scoping out the project and thinking about materials, considerations need to made right from the start:

Determine the purpose of the shed

While this may seem obvious, the intended use is important in the decision-making process. Is it for storage? and if so, what will be stored there? Is it for a hobby room or relaxing space? The purpose of the shed will influence your choice of materials, insulation and roof waterproofing needs:

  • Storage shed: durability and water-tightness will be priorities
  • Garden room: Aesthetic appeal and highly reliable waterproofing will be top of the list.
  • Workshop: Insulation and noise reduction could be key factors. High performance waterproofing and minimised condensation will be a must when using and storing power tools.

Planning permission and incentives

While permission is not always needed to replace existing systems, building compliance is mandatory in the UK, so an awareness of current standards is crucial, whether you’re making seemingly significant changes or not. For a new shed or a garden room, applying for planning permission is a likely requirement.

In some UK regions, incentives may be in place for using certain materials, particularly sustainable ones. Local authority criteria and requirements may differ, so a visit to the local planning department is a good idea. It can highlight both constraints and incentives in the use of certain materials, particularly insulation or eco shed roofing systems.

Shed roofing deck integrity

The condition and integrity of the roof deck should be considered when planning to replace existing waterproofing on a shed roof. If the deck is damaged, perhaps from a previous leak, then this should be repaired or replaced to avoid problems later. EPDM rubber membranes have a 50-year service life expectancy and require full contact adhesion for the best results.

Cost vs. value

It is tempting to go for a cheap fix when recovering or repairing a shed roof. However, sustainability and long term value are becoming increasingly more important to UK homeowners. Rubber shed roofing systems offer a lifetime solution to waterproofing, meaning that the likelihood of needing to replace the shed roofing again is at an absolute minimum.

This saves the homeowner both time and money over the expected lifespan of an EPDM shed roof. Compared to felt, for example, EPDM is likely to last three or more times longer. For sustainability goals, this also significantly reduces landfill waste as EPDM is fully recyclable once it eventually reaches the end of its exceptional service life. Liquid shed and flat roofing systems also deliver a long life expectancy and offer seamless coverage, resulting in a cost-efficient solution for more complex shed roofing projects.

How to repair a flat roof

The importance of accurate measurements

Whether you choose a rubber shed roofing system or take a liquid approach, most are quantified in meterage or feet, some in linear metres and some square meterage. Shed roof kits are sold in standard shed sizes (in feet and metres) and adhesives are calculated typically in square metres (for average coverage).

It is therefore critical to measure accurately. Measure the long and short sides using a long tape where possible to avoid miscalculations. Double check measurements and have a second person present or to check the measurements separately.

Once you have accurate measurements in metres and have made the square meterage calculation, you can use these to order the correct shed roofing kit, other materials quantities or input them into our EPDM roof kit builder tool.

Installing Shed Roofing

DIY or professional install?

Some shed roofing materials are more DIY-friendly than others and your skill and confidence in installing shed roofing yourself will be a consideration. If you’re ready and confident to go the DIY route, we’re here to help with systems designed to be straightforward for a DIYer with skills.

Installing the waterproofing on shed roofing is well within the means of a competent DIYer with good levels of confidence and skill. Systems like RubberCover provide a simplified approach to installation, with one-piece membranes, cold, water-based adhesives and install accessories, making them ideal for DIY. We’ll support you with expert advice, a complete shed roofing kit and step-by-step installation guides.

Our extensive resource library has been developed to cover preparation and installation. We’re here to support you every step of the way if you decide to handle the waterproofing yourself. If you decide DIY isn’t for you, a professional EPDM installer will be able to complete your waterproofing easily and quickly – it may not cost as much as you think…

Not confident to install yourself? Find a local contractor

PermaRoof UK have teamed up with certified and trusted rubber roofing installers across the UK to ensure you can have the best quality products fitted by fully trained contractors in your area.

EPDM shed roofing kit installation guidelines

EPDM is the perfect system for DIY installers, fast and easy to fit in one piece for most typical UK shed roofing projects. There are specific stages in the process of installation and we’re here to guide you through. We have an extensive library of installation guides, videos and online tutorials – browse them all below.

Preparation

Carry out any required repairs or replace the timber shed roof deck as appropriate. For decks in good condition, make sure they are clean, oil, grease and preferably dust-free. Any existing roof covering should be fully removed for the best results and for full adhesion of EPDM rubber membranes.

If you have installed appropriate insulation or recovery board over the top of the old covering, it can stay in place, but ensure that there is no debris left on the roof deck that may cause damage.

Check the materials

Unpack your shed roofing kit and check it to make sure everything is included. In a standard shed kit, you’ll find the membrane, spray adhesive and sealant (plus your instructions). Other types of roof kit may include edge trims and fixings. Lay out the membrane to rest over the shed roof for at least half an hour to allow packaging creases to dissipate.

Installation process

Note that non-timber shed roof decks typically require the use of primer to prepare the surface. Water-based adhesives are used for timber decks only. Liquid systems provide a good alternative option for sealing a concrete roof.

Make sure that the membrane is positioned evenly across the apex of the shed roof with sufficient overhang around each side. Fold the membrane back over itself to expose one side of the shed roof.

Spray or liquid adhesive is applied to both the back of the membrane and to the roof deck. This must then be allowed to ‘go-off’ for a few minutes until it becomes tacky to the touch. Roll the membrane over the tacky roof deck and smooth with an EPDM roller or soft to medium bristled household broom to remove any trapped air.

Repeat on the other side of the roof, reattach the shed battens or replace with new, adding the sealant as recommended to complete the seal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shed Roofing

Why is my felt roof leaking?2022-12-14T15:26:27+00:00

Traditional felt shed roofing loses its integrity over time and often needs to be repaired or replaced. In hot weather, the surface is prone to melting and this can result in bubbles forming across the surface. When it rains, or the weather grows cooler, these bubbles can crack easily, which lets in water.

Replacing old felt covering with a modern EPDM membrane minimises the risk of leaking and preserves the integrity of the shed for longer.

How much overhang should I have on a shed roof?2022-12-14T15:26:03+00:00

The ideal length of overhang is around 150mm. We allow an additional 300mm of EPDM in our shed roof kits to ensure an even overhang on all sides.

How much does a shed roof cost?2022-12-12T10:07:26+00:00

The cost of shed roofing can vary according to the project scope and selected materials. It can often be tempting to buy a cheap solution for the short term, such as felt. Replacing a shed roof with a long-term approach offers better cost vs. value. EPDM membrane lasts exceptionally longer than other traditional materials.

With materials costs rising in 2022, it makes sense to ensure a cost efficient solution. We have kept our range of complete shed roof kits in standard sizes from as little as £84 (6ft x 4ft). Fast and easy to install, and with a lifetime guarantee, this type of system offers the best long term value.

Do I need to remove the felt from my shed roof before re-roofing?2022-12-12T10:06:05+00:00

Yes, it is always advisable to strip back all the existing roof covering down to the timber substrate. Ensure the surface is clean, dust-free and dry for the best results

What alternatives to felt are there for a shed roof?2022-12-12T10:03:11+00:00

Modern EPDM membranes are fast becoming the go-to replacement for outdated felt shed coverings. With a more diverse range of goods typically stored in sheds and garages, a better form of protection is now more popular.

What is the cheapest way to re-roof a shed?2022-12-12T10:00:47+00:00

One of the fastest and most cost effective ways to re-roof a shed is to buy and install a DIY EPDM shed roof kit. With a 50-year service life expectancy, cost vs. value over time can be significantly higher than other traditional materials with a shorter lifespan.

How to Calculate a Flat Roof Area2022-06-10T11:53:15+00:00

How to calculate a flat roof area in square metres. Measure the length and width of the structure from the outside for accuracy. Multiply the two figures to calculate the square meterage of the flat roof. E.G. 4 metres (length) multiplied by 3 metres (width) = 12 square metres in total.

Flat Roof Replacement: What materials are best?2025-09-05T07:46:47+00:00

What materials are best for a flat roof replacement? To replace a flat roof, we recommend using a modern rubber membrane and a suitable water-based deck adhesive. If you are installing onto concrete or metal, rather than a timber deck, use a roofing bonding adhesive instead. Flat roofs with rubber membrane can be fully sealed with an edge and gutter trim system.

How to waterproof a shed2021-12-10T13:09:16+00:00

To waterproof a shed, we recommend using an EPDM membrane. Start by measuring the length and width to calculate the size of the membrane you will need. Add 300mm to allow for overhang. Strip back the old roof covering and prepare the surface area, before applying adhesive and the new EPDM membrane.
