Prepare the roof deck, removing all the previous covering and any debris, dirt, dust or grease spots. Unpack the membrane and lay it out over the surface to rest for 30 minutes to allow any packing creases to dissipate. Fold half back on itself. Apply the spray adhesive to both the wood deck and the membrane according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Roll the membrane back over the deck and smooth down with a soft brush to remove any air pockets.

Where to start
If you’re DIYing your flat roof covering, we’d always recommend a lightweight and easy-to-install EPDM system. It offers an exceptional 50-year service life expectancy and high-performance waterproofing.
Fast and easy to install, EPDM is ideal for a range of DIY flat roof projects such as:
- Shed roof replacement
- Garage roofing
- Bay window waterproofing
- Flat roof extensions
- Garden rooms
- And more.
Preparation is important, central to the success of any DIY flat roof install. Make sure that the roof deck is in good condition before you plan any other part of the project. If repairs are needed, ensure they are carried out first. Laying membrane over a damaged timber deck will only lead to problems further down the line.

The benefits of EPDM
EPDM membrane offers a range of benefits for domestic installations. From an unmatched 50-year service life expectancy to ease of installation, high performance waterproofing and much more.
RubberCover EPDM from ElevateTM is one of the most popular membranes for flat roofing. This is because it offers 100% waterproofing over the exceptional service life and is cold applied in a single, lightweight sheet for most domestic projects.
For both DIY and trade roofing projects, EPDM is fast-becoming the go-to membrane of choice.
How to buy EPDM flat roofing
Buying EPDM today is straightforward. Here at PermaRoof, we provide a custom-cutting service, where we can cut your EPDM to your specifications up to 15m x 60m. This means that for most domestic flat roof installs, we can provide your membrane in a single, lightweight sheet. This results in fewer field seams, which are the traditionally vulnerable parts of any waterproofing system.
We also stock a range of flat roof kits to make both the buying and the installation process fast and easy. Our kits include RubberCover EPDM, sufficient adhesive, sealant and trim (where applicable). Choose from a range of standard-sized kits, ideal for shed or garage roofing, or enter your own size and we’ll do the rest.
Buying a kit reduces the risk of over- or under-buying the materials, which is often half the battle for the average DIYer.
For more complex projects, try the free PermaRoof Kit Builder app, which produces a full kit list from basic project details, such as:
- Accurate project measurements
- Adjoining walls and other buildings
- Extrusions (skylights, flue pipes etc)
- Outlets
Buying from an authorised supplier of genuine branded RubberCover ensures a high-quality membrane with a warranty to guarantee performance. It is important to make sure you know what to look for – see our blog post here to find out more.
