Rob the Roofer returns with the penultimate episode in our popular video series. Our resident EPDM installation expert is a part of the professional training team, working with trade roofers from across the UK as they experience high quality EPDM training and liquid waterproofing courses.
EPDM adhesive is applied to both the underside of the membrane and to the substrate. It should be left to flash off until tacky and can be left on too long. If using a water-based EPDM adhesive – it is applied white and if goes clear, it has been left on too long. Bonding adhesives have a longer flashing time and can be left for up to a maximum of 30 minutes before mating the surfaces together.

Can EPDM adhesive be left on too long?
Find out what Rob the Roofer has to say about EPDM adhesives and flash-off time…
Video transcript
The water-based [adhesive] can definitely be left on too long to flash off. You will find that it starts turning from the colour white towards a clearer colour – it has then been left too long.
With the bonding adhesive, generally there is a window of opportunity of a good 20 minutes to half an hour. So, from applying the adhesive onto the substrate and also the back of the rubber membrane, once it has gone touch dry, you then do have that window of opportunity between 20 and 30 minutes to mate those surfaces together.
