What are Kingspan insulation boards?

Kingspan insulation boards are manufactured using advanced foam technology. Available in a range of different thicknesses, TR27 Kingspan is suitable for insulating flat roof projects of all sizes and is ideal for EPDM and liquid roofing systems.

Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 boards consist of a fibre-free rigid thermoset polyisocyanurate (PIR) core faced on both sides with a coated glass tissue. This is bonded to the insulation core during the manufacturing process. The PIR foam technology uses a HCFC-free blowing agent with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of zero and low ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential).

Installation and design considerations

Linear thermal bridging, wind loading, falls and many other design aspects should be considered during the planning stages of your project for the best results. It is wise to seek the advice of a professional, experienced installer to get the most out of your flat roof insulation.

In new build projects, it is recommended that Kingspan TR27 insulation boards are installed over a separate vapour barrier or vapour control layer, unless used with a sealed metal roof deck.

The selection of your water vapour barrier may also guide you to choose the method of fixing your insulation boards. We stock a range of fixings for all our insulation boards.

For roof refurbishments, the boards can be laid over other materials. It is recommended that you carry out a condensation risk assessment and check with the local authority planning department or refer to building guidelines about thermal performance requirements.

How to Install Kingspan Insulation Boards

Kingspan can be installed over a variety of substrates, including:

  • Wood
  • Composite panels
  • Concrete
  • Metal

Preparation of the roof deck is important, regardless of whether you’re installing over an existing roof system or a brand new deck – bonding the boards down or mechanically fixing.

The Kingspan brochure details a range of preparation and installation guidelines depending on which type of surface and the design considerations for the project. Download your free copy below.

Also make sure that the boards, once installed, are given adequate protection if other trades are to continue works on the roofing.

More FAQs about Kingspan and insulation

What is a U-Value?

A U-value gives you a sum of thermal resistance and is also commonly known as a U-Rating. There are regulations in the UK that govern the maximum allowed heat loss, so the lower the U-Value, the better.

Can you install Kingspan on metal roof decks?

Yes. Kingspan boards can be installed onto metal roof decks. If the deck isn’t sealed, a vapour control layer is advised. Use mechanical fixings and refer to the Kingspan brochure for full guidelines and requirements.

Do you need special fixings for PIR insulation boards?

Kingspan TR27 PIR boards should always be installed using the correct fixings as recommended by the manufacturer. We stock a range of tube fasteners and fixings in our online store here. Contact the expert team if you need help choosing the right boards or fixings.

Is Kingspan suitable for Green Roofs?

Kingspan TR27 is suitable for most green roof projects. There are a range of considerations, including dry weight allowance, wind uplift and more. Refer to the Kingspan brochure or get in touch with the team to find out more.
