The Applications of Liquid PU Coatings
Liquid coatings provide a long term approach for a wide range of applications and situations. Some of the most common applications include, but are not limited to:

Emergency Roof Repairs
PermaRoof introduced Emergency Roof Repair, based on its innovative P100 and P500 liquid PU systems. Fast and easy to apply, it seals cracks and stops associated leaks to minimise damage. Ideal for both the long-term and to provide a temporary solution while waiting for a professional repair.

Other domestic applications for P100
Buried Roofs
Buried roofs can be found topping underground spaces. This could be a basement, for example, or cellar that extends beneath the main footprint of the building. Underground parking garages is another common type of buried roof in the UK. Waterproofing is a core element of the buried roofs and walls of any underground structure.
A long-term approach is needed for buried roofs, in a similar way to green roofing, to protect the integrity of the project. P100 liquid PU is perfect, being fast curing to a seamless, leak resistant finish. Inside, it can help to enhance humidity protection, in addition to tanking applications.
Roof Terraces
Roof terraces are increasing in popularity, offering additional space for homeowners across the UK. With urban land availability shrinking, flat roofs are ideal places to add value in terms of usability and often in monetary terms too. Modern roof terracing design often incorporates many features typically found in gardens, such as furniture, paths, patios and planting, similar to some types of green roof.
P100 liquid coatings offer a comprehensive approach for a wide range of substrates, delivering the high performance and reliability needed for these projects. Versatile, fully walkable and capable of accommodating garden furniture, pavers and decking.
Inverted roofing systems
Inverted roofing is a growing concept that is replacing warm roof designs across the UK. The waterproofing is installed beneath a ballasted insulating layer that uses pedestals to create air flow. These types of roofing designs can offer a range of benefits – for storm water management and performance on projects with foot traffic, such as terraces or green roofs.
For inverted roofing systems, both insulating boards and waterproofing should be seamlessly reliable to ensure the longevity and success of the project. Liquid roofing systems are ideal for inverted roofing.
Balconies
Balconies are often the only outside space for apartments and flats in the UK. With more people spending an increasing amount of time at home, balcony spaces are receiving more attention and being used more frequently as a result. For some projects, renovation may require additional work to the flooring and roofing to ensure reliability.
The nature of liquid coatings makes them ideal for balcony projects, covering almost any substrate. Whether waterproofing beneath a deck or creating a safer, anti-slip surface, P100 can deliver the reliability you need.

The benefits and advantages of liquid waterproofing with P100

How to Apply Permaroof100
Installing a liquid rubber roof with the Permaroof100 system is super-smooth and fast. It cures quickly and is effective almost straightaway once correctly applied over an adequately prepared substrate.
Needing few tools for application, P100 can be quickly and safely cold applied in a single coat using a foam roller. Brushes or small rollers can be used for detailed areas. Containing a self-levelling compound, the main product does not have to be overworked, simplifying application for a non-professional approach. Ensure fascias and soffits are masked off and protected from drips during the applications process. Find the full installation guide in the downloads section below.
Anti-slip
When creating an anti-slip surface, such as a car parking zone or to make safe slippery garden steps and paths, use a recommended medium for the best results. This can be mixed with the liquid rubber solution or for a more even spread and finish, sprinkled across the still-wet surface.
Completing the seal with roof trim
When creating a liquid coating on a roofing project, installing edge trim completes the seal around the edges of the surface area. Trim is always installed after the curing process has completed and creates a professional-looking, neat finish that both tidies and protects the edge of the flat roof for the long-term.
Liquid Roofing FAQs
For many applications, a liquid coating can provide a more comprehensive solution, effectively sealing complex surfaces where membrane is difficult or impossible to install. This can include historically damp situations, such as basements, cellars or other structures with buried roofing.
Being cold applied, often in a single coat makes it safer and faster to apply than other types of waterproofing. As it can also be applied to a wider range of substrates and even cover some types of existing covering, it can sometimes offer a more flexible approach than membrane for homeowners tacking complex projects.
- Electric drill with mixer attachment
- Rollers – it is recommended that you use a high quality 9” roller for main area application and a smaller 4” roller for detailing
- Sharp scissors – to cut and trim bandage
It is also recommended that you protect fascia and soffits, gutters and any other visible trim from potential drips or runs. Cover these with masking paper to simplify cleaning following application of the roofing system.
No, it is not advisable to use the product while it is raining. However, it can effectively seal in minutes and will protect the repair if rain begins shortly afterwards.
Although PermaRoof Emergency Roof Repair is not a paint product, this type of liquid is often referred to as ‘repair paint’.
The product consists of a liquid acrylic polyurethane blend that can be used in conjunction with a webbing-type matting for a longer term repair.
No, PermaRoof Emergency Roof Repair can be applied with a paintbrush once thoroughly stirred.
Yes, liquid PU or rubber-based systems can be applied to pitched roofs. High quality liquid waterproofing systems, such as our P500 product, typically contain a self-levelling compound. This means that an additive is needed to remove the self-levelling element. Once thoroughly combined, the product is ideal for pitched roofing.
Liquid PU roofing, once correctly applied, can have an expected service life of up to 30 years. It can perform as well as many types of membrane over a wide range of substrates.
Liquid PU roofing products are typically applied using a series of ordinary decorating rollers. We would recommend using a 4” roller or paintbrush for detailing and a 9” roller for main surface application.
P500, PermaRoof’s liquid roofing solution, is a polyurethane-based, flexible product. It also contains a self-levelling compound to simplify application. Liquid membrane is also acceptably known in the industry as liquid rubber roofing. Liquid membrane and liquid PU.
