How to get wrinkles out of rubber roofing membrane. Lay the membrane on a flat surface to rest for 30 minutes. This is often enough to allow packing creases to dissipate. For tougher creases in EPDM, gently heat the affected area using an air heat source and use a silicone roller to smooth the wrinkle out. Do not leave the heat source in one spot for any length of time to avoid damaging the rubber.

We are routinely asked how to get wrinkles out of rubber roofing. Often, packing creases will dissipate after laying the EPDM membrane out flat for half an hour, but occasionally there is a stubborn wrinkle to smooth out. It is a simple process that is fast and easy to carry out … let’s look at the question in further detail to see how to tackle it.

Removing creases from rubber roofing membrane
Once you’ve unpacked your EPDM rubber roofing membrane, you may notice light packing creases. This is quite normal and when you’re ready to install the system, laying the membrane out flat across the surface of the roof for 30 minutes is often enough for them to dissipate.
However, occasionally you may find a heavier crease or wrinkle. This can be down to many things, such as if the membrane has shifted during transit or has been stored unused for some time. Heavier creases and wrinkles do need to be relaxed before installation and it isn’t difficult to do.
You will need an air heat gun or similar tool and a silicone roller. Do not use a naked flame heat source, such as a blowtorch. This type of heat will damage the membrane, compromising the installation and performance.
Follow the step-by-step guidelines below to effectively remove wrinkles from rubber roofing.
Your Step-by-Step Guide: How to Get Wrinkles Out of Rubber Roofing
Step One

Lay out the affected part of the membrane and smooth over a flat surface, free of dust or debris.
Step two

Using a heat gun, gently heat the wrinkle and smooth it flat with the silicone roller.
Step three

Keep the heat source moving evenly up and down the creased EPDM without remaining in one place for too long.
Step four

Apply firm and consistent pressure to the roller to iron out the wrinkle.
Step five

Pay extra attention to the previously creased area when installing the membrane on the flat roof deck, using the silicone roller again to fully secure the membrane.
