Bike Garden Storage Waterproofing

EPDM flat rubber roofing is fast and easy to apply and can create the opportunity for you to offer additional services that your clients might be interested in. For instance, the creation of an effective bike or log store. Rob Hunt, training instructor at EPDM rubber roofing specialists Permaroof UK, goes through how to successfully complete this type of project.

1. Let your rubber roof rest before installing

Complete final measurements and gather all your required tools and materials.

An EPDM membrane will have sat in a particular position for some time during packing and delivery, which means it isn’t quite ready to install straightaway.

Let your EPDM membrane rest for around 30 minutes before you begin the installation process to allow creases to relax.

2. Start by preparing the area

You may not realise it, but when it comes to applying a rubber roof, one of the worst things you can do is to try and install it on a roof deck that is dirty and dusty.

Firstly, if you adhere the membrane to a roof that isn’t clean, you are likely to end up with a bumpy mess that you will want to do again. Secondly, the adhesive used in rubber roofing isn’t going to adhere reliably if the surface isn’t clear of dust or debris.

Once everything is in place, give the surface a good brush down with a soft household brush – this should remove enough dust and oil or grease spots to create the ideal surface to work with.

3. Make sure it’s the right size

If you have used a calculation tool, you should find the membrane fits with very little waste. However, there’s still a chance you’re going to need to trim some of it off in order to get it to the right size.

4. Time to apply your adhesive

Firstly, fold back one half of the membrane and apply a water-based adhesive to the roof decking with a nine-inch roller. Secondly, use Firestone Bonding adhesive at the edges, which is much stronger and will dry much more quickly. It should be applied to the roof deck, as well as the membrane itself, and allowed to go touch dry.

5. Roll the membrane onto the roof deck

Make sure the membrane is laid evenly and double check you don’t have air bubbles trapped underneath.

Use a wide-span domestic broom with soft bristles to press down the membrane, a roller to push out any bubbles, and a push a penny roller to get into the corners and edges to make them neater.

6. Prepare to apply the edging

Trim any access from the edges and apply a tape adhesive to the edging.

7. Secure the edging

Neatly fold over the edges, lay over the edging and secure further with nails.

8. Present the finished job

A watertight and effective bike or wood store that your client will be over the moon with.
