The county town of Northampton is one of the largest in the UK with a population of 212,000, and is in the East Midlands area on the banks of the River Nene. Lying roughly midway between London and Birmingham, Northampton is a popular commuter town, and has a long and rich history dating from the Bronze Age.

The introduction of Northampton Castle, an occasional Royal country residence, elevated the position of Northampton during the Middle Ages and it was granted a Royal Charter in 1189 by King Richard I. The strategic position of Northampton in the centre of England lent itself to the setup of a successful government and church meeting place for centuries to follow.

Northampton suffered during the English Civil War, after which King Charles II ordered the destruction of the town walls and castle. The town also suffered during the Great Fire of Northampton in 1675, and it was not until the 18th Century that the town began a period of redevelopment in the Industrial Revolution and utilised the new Grand Union Canal to increase its trade potential for leather and shoe manufacture.

Northampton had made military footwear during the Civil War, and continued to produce footwear well into the 20th Century. Reportedly, Northamptonshire shoe factories supplied more than 23 million pairs of boots to the military during WWI. The industry was responsible for rapid economic growth in the region as demand increased.

Northampton was designated a New Town in 1968, and that plus the introduction of a rail link began establishing it as a commuter town. There followed an extensive redevelopment plan, and further housing was built to accommodate the town’s burgeoning population.

This has resulted in a wide and varied range of architectural design in the town, ranging from commercial developments to modern housing, in addition to a number of stone-built buildings that have survived wars and the fire.

With a popular university culture in the town, many residents have extended homes with flat roofed garage and house extensions to accommodate the student population. With such a variety of styles and construction projects, Northampton roofers and construction workers must provide assistance and skills for projects such as:

  • Rubber roofing material and application
  • Sedum roofs for urban green roofing projects
  • Modern, commercial liquid waterproofing
  • Flat roof repairs and maintenance
  • Flat roof extension projects
  • Single ply membrane - the fastest growing roofing sector
  • EPDM roofing installation
  • Shed roof replacement
  • And more.
