EPDM roofs have a proven track record around the world for longevity, waterproofing and weatherability in both domestic and commercial situations. Since EPDM was introduced in the early 1960s, it has steadily grown in popularity, experiencing a surge in the 1970s during the Middle-Eastern oil crisis, when the price of tar-type roofing materials shot through the roof (pardon the pun).
The current expected lifespan of EPDM roofs exceeds 50 years, according to field testing and proven installations. This makes EPDM one of the best single-ply membranes on the market, far exceeding the expectations of other types of roofing materials, such as felt, which can degrade during temperature fluctuations and tears easily.
Why do EPDM roofs last longer than other materials?
EPDM rubber roofs, when applied correctly to adequately prepared roof decks, far outperform other types of roofing. EPDM is manufactured from synthetic rubber compounds and is rolled to different weights under pressure.
The nature of the synthetic rubber membrane offers incredible waterproofing qualities and a resistance to UV radiation, ozone and temperature fluctuations which slows the aging process significantly. It has elasticity up to 300% to accommodate building movement and extremes in temperature, which is unmatched by any other roofing materials.
Another element that strengthens EPDM roof installations and gives them better longevity is the overall absence of seams and joins across the roof. In most cases EPDM roofs can be installed with a single sheet of membrane (Permaroof EPDM membranes are available in large sheet sizes up to 12.5m x 30m) and this means that there are no vulnerable joins where historically failures occur most often in flat roofing.
All-in-all, EPDM roofs are designed to last over the long-term, and Permaroof back this up with 20-year materials-only warranty if your installation has been carried out by a Permaroof-trained contractor.
