Case Study: PermaRoof Commercial Supports Covid Hospital Build

The brief:

From February 2021 to March 2022, Samuel Moore Roofing enlisted our help to install the roof on a new intensive care unit at the Royal Infirmary in Hull. The project was required in response to an emergency Covid hospital being built in the height of the pandemic, meaning a quick turnaround was paramount.

Due to the project needing to be completed in a tight time frame, we were required to install and waterproof the roof while the steel frame was being built, which meant there was little room for error or delay due to the many complex moving parts.

The solution:

After being briefed on the project, we recommended a full installation of RubberGard EPDM, complete with a Firestone Vgard vapour control layer (VCL) and PIR Insulation.

Once the Firestone Vgard AVCL and PIR insulation had been installed, it was time to apply the Firestone RubberGard EPDM, which ensured watertight protection from the elements and increases the longevity of its lifespan.

The 30-metre wide hospital required almost 1,100 sqm of RubberGard EPDM, which was craned into position in large 3.6 by 30 metre sections. Not only did this enable an easier installation, it also provided protection against water infiltrating due to less joins being required. This allowed the work to progress at a pace that meant it was completed ahead of schedule.
