The city of Worcester in the county of Worcestershire in the heart of the UK has a population of around 100,000 people, and has a rich history. The Romans settled in the city, and used ancient Neolithic tracks to form part of Ryknild Street. Although not a major town in Roman times, it would have had significant ‘traffic’ due to its position on the Gloucester-Wroxeter road. Evidence of pottery and ironworks has been discovered, in addition to the remains of a small fort. The famous Worcester Cathedral was completed during the 12th Century, but construction began in 1084, with parts dating to earlier times.

The final battle of the English Civil War was fought in Worcester, and the New Model Army, led by Oliver Cromwell defeated the Cavaliers led by King Charles II in September 1651. The Parliamentarians outnumbered the Royalists by more than 12,000.

Worcester’s economic growth was spurred by the cloth industry, and by medieval times, the population numbered more than 10,000. The town prospered in cloth and later porcelain, as the world-famous Royal Worcester brand grew in popularity. The production of Royal Worcester pottery continued until 2009, when production ceased, although some hand-decorators are still employed by the company museum. The other major industry during the 18th and 19th Centuries was the art of glove making, which at its height, employed 30,000 people. The reduction of import taxes on foreign goods made a dent in the industry in the late-19th Century, and just three companies survived into the 20th Century.

A huge flood occurred in 1670, when the River Severn burst its banks and was catalogued as the worst the city had experienced. Since then, no other flood had come close to the heights of the Flood of 1670 until 2007 following severe and prolonged rain.

The old city of Worcester has a wealth of historic architecture that exists today, and the wider conurbation includes a range of pre-and post-war housing, in addition to the modern. With such a diverse range of buildings, Worcester roofers and builders must be experienced to cope with projects such as:

  • Commercial liquid waterproofing for flat roofs
  • Flat roof repair and maintenance
  • Shed roof replacement
  • Rubber roofing material and application
  • EPDM roofing projects
  • Eco-friendly urban green roof projects
  • Water management with sedum roofs
  • And more.
